Tried getting more painterly feeling on this picture. And i think i never did lighting on face from bottom, so it was good practice. Started with my usual horrid 2 minute sketch, and used color and overlay layers to add color. After that i just try to find shapes to make it look better. War is hell... so I made evil looking warlord who just burned down some village. Started with gray scale scribble on which I've set up lighting, all I knew I wanted it dark. First I've put bluish sky but I really didn't like it, so I changed it to blend with picture better. Just picked color from bottom with eyedropper tool and gone over with it. Added sword because whats a warlord without a weapon, made it glowing with flame kinda thing... Anyway thank You for reading and here are screen shots of Warlord process.

Charlize Theron

So I've tried painting Charlize Theron. You will find lips and skin tones I've used on first screen shot. Usually i have them in swatches window, but I've put them on canvas so maybe someone will find them helpful or something. They are around mid tone value range, for shadows i usually use multiply most of the time. Line art is in multiply mode and I just put colors beneath it on normal layer. After all colors are set I'll merge everything down and make normal layer on top to clean up and stuff. Well thank You for reading and here are screen shots of Charlize Theron process.

Well this time its Kimberly Williams I tried to paint. Didn't work out great but practice makes perfect. I did a bit different this time, I've put "line art" into multiply mode and used color immediately instead of doing gray scale/overlay. At the end I've used unsharp mask filter to try it out. It sharpens image so its not blurry, its nothing special but looks interesting. Setting were default ones, i don't really know that much about filters. Anyway thank You for reading and here are screen shots of Kimberly Williams process.

So i wanted to do a profile, but it was surprisingly hard to find celeb profile reference. Eventually i found Jenna Elfman with pretty interesting lighting, from very dark to very light in a short space. Overlay for color, and later on color layer for hair... needed more yellowish color to get it closer to blonde. Thank You for reading and here are screen shots of Jenna Elfman process.

Well it was Sandra Bullock this time for practice. Same old story... gray scale,overlay layer... reference was pretty bad, but she looked pretty on it so i tried. Saturated it a bit with multiply layer. Maybe overdid it, eh its practice so why not try. Tried simplifying her lace thingy shes wearing so it doesn't overtake picture... Just for practice. Didn't take a lot of time, considering how slow i am... Took a few screen shots as i worked. I started gray scale as usual just to get color palette for painting using overlay layer. Colored background blue, i think it brings her out nicely. Used reference off course, i liked the pose so i gave it a shot :)... I should do this more often for practice... But most photos on web are photoshoped so it makes it kinda hard to use them as a reference. Anyway here's 1 Adriana Lima to go...Yes please ^_-

Returned to b&w, and flipped...I flip a lot as i draw, flipping allows you to see mistakes in painting.. Its a mirror image and should look good enough too.

Just a WiP...Got a bit tired of it to be honest...but ill finish her if its the last thing i do :).You can see i don't spend a lot of time on line art,i found it distracting so i like leave it vague on what it might be... Just very general shape, and then pull out smaller shapes from big one.With too precise line art i tend to follow it too much, and i paint over it anyway...so lately i like leaving room for defining shapes.Not too much left to do,bit of highlights and shadows here and there...Well ill post when i finish in gray scale or maybe in color.

Trick or Treat Vol. 1

Well this is Daisy and i'm gonna use her to show how to,in 5 min or less, add some kind of mystical pattern onto her. This method requires that You are working with background layers only, so if You have 20+ layers you can not do this. Flatten Image is Your friend...

So here we go, firstly make a Background Copy. Now there are two identical images, one on top of other.

Now right-click on upper layer and Select Blending Option, then left click Bevel and Emboss. Some Options will appear, set the lighting position according to established source on painting/drawing. Once satisfied click OK and effects tab will appear underneath Background Copy Layer..

From Tool Tab select eraser tool. Make it have size control = pen pressure, so it changes thickness according to pressure. Use it to draw pattern by erasing Background copy layer, Bevel and Emboss effect will draw shadow and light...

Once some kind of pattern is drawn, make normal layer beneath Background Copy and merge Background Copy down to that layer. Now there's a bit of extra effect, so use eraser set to large soft brush. Since beneath Background Copy is still original painting anything You erase gets reverted back to original state. So use eraser to blend pattern with picture, erasing where shapes get darker for instance..

Use Hard Brush to erase edges of picture and add some highlight on parts of pattern..Merge all down if You're satisfied and voila You have some kind of pattern on picture with correct lighting in under 5 minutes. You can tweak it further if necessary...Well that's it, maybe You knew this, maybe You didn't, i hope it may help someone. I don't use this method for pattern, usually ill just paint it in, but if You needed it really fast for some reason, You could use this.Anyway thank You for reading..

Coloring Me Softly

So I have took a few screen shots of coloring Assassin gray scale image.Ill try explain how i do it, seems boring just posting finished work.

Firstly i have set overall color of painting using color balance found in Layer > Adjustment Layer > Color Balance.Ive set it to blue and then erased color over character.Not really necessary but it can interfere with skin color...

Using Overlay layer added more color to background. Some warm gray,green for ground and red, purple hue for clouds.If you use 50% gray in overlay layer it wont show at all..Above 50% things go lighter, below 50% things go darker. Top bar in HSB slider is Hue (color), middle bar is Saturation (color intensity) and bottom bar is Brightness (color blackness).

Moving bars to color i wanted for skin and clothes on a different overlay layer. Using another layer for skin and another for clothes allows me to change color easily by locking transparent pixels.

And i did change the color of clothes, brown seemed very dull and uninteresting so i changed it to purple.Added some lighter purple to blend it with overall atmosphere. Using color layer, colored pattern on clothes. Beware of color layer it has tendency to metalize objects giving them high contrast and saturation.Great for metal stuff but bad for skin...At this point i was ok with colors, sort off, so i have merged everything to one layer and from this moment on worked with only background layer and one normal layer on top to clean things up...

So were almost finished now...Using 80-100% opacity hard or soft brush cleaned up color transitions a bit by picking up local color (Eyedropper Tool). Didn't go too far because i wanted to keep painterly drawing kinda thing going on, plus i'm lazy..Added highlights and poped pattern to be more visible using Dodge Tool, fixed clouds a bit...

And tadaa its done (as if painting can ever be actually done, you could draw forever)...Pimped out daggers a bit, they were unworthy of assassin,fixed clouds and added mountains in back to get some depth going, failed there a bit eh...i don't paint scenery a lot, though i should...seems i never get around to it...So that's how i color gray scale, maybe someone will find it helpful, maybe not. Anyhow thank You for reading..
